Applied Solutions

At this year's CeBIT show, many exhibitors presented solutions using the recently standardized Gigabit-Ethernet visitor software to accelerate speeds on the Intranet.

ATM technology (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) has established itself as the technology for applications which make particular demands on Quality of Service.  The trend towards the convergence of data and voice networks continues unabated.  Network fusion simplifies network management and makes it possible to provide such services as "Multimedia over IP" (Internet Protocol) or virtual private networks (VPN).

WLAN technology (Wireless Local Area Network) is now used to create wireless computer connections to the Intranet.  This increases user mobility while reducing the amount of cabling required.  Telecommunications companies and service providers alike are taking advantage of wireless technology to hurdle the last mile to the end user via WLL (Wireless Local Loop).

Presentations also included a large number of solutions designed to provide customers with rapid access to the Internet via conventional telephone lines with the help of xDSL technology (Digital Subscriber Line).  Wideband communications networks, electrical power lines and satellite technology are also being used for subscriber connection.

Telecommunications

The telecommunications market has become increasingly competitive, with enterprises introducing new rates and value-added services in attempts to secure larger market shares.  As a result of the integration of mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, the user can now be reached anywhere in the country at a single telephone number.

Because mobile phone miniaturization has been exhausted to capacity, the new cell phones now boast an even wider array of functions.  The silent vibration ring has become a standard feature and many of the phones are already equipped as dual-band or even triple-band phones so that they can be used on any mobile communications network in the world or via satellite.  An increasing number of integrated organizer functions, such as appointment and address books, have also become more popular.

Equipped with a WAP-capable (Wireless Application Protocol) micro browser, it can even access information on the Internet.  And the first cell phone complete with a built-in digital camera made its debut at CeBIT '08 this year. The first retro-fitted traffic telematics terminal equipment can now be installed in a standard car radio compartment.  This unit integrates radio, mobile telephone and navigation systems.  In addition to the basic functions for emergency calls and breakdown calls, this equipment provides users with up-to-date traffic information and customized route recommendations.
